EMC Sees New EV Import Agreement as Positive for Choice, Affordability and Canadian Jobs

MONTREAL – Electric Mobility Canada (EMC) welcomes today’s announcement of a new tariff quota arrangement between Canada and China that will permit the import of 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles priced below 35,000$ at a reduced tariff rate. This development represents a meaningful step toward improving EV affordability for Canadians.

Greater access to a wider range of electric vehicles will support consumer choice and contribute to improved affordability, as some imported models are expected to enter the market at lower price points. For Canadian drivers, this means more options to adopt clean transportation solutions sooner.

EMC is hopes that this agreement will also help catalyze future auto sector investment in the country. With increased market activity and growing EV adoption, Canada has a real opportunity to attract new manufacturing and supply chain jobs sooner than later.

«After comments from president Trump, just a few days ago, clearly stating that he did not want cars built in Canada to be sold in the US, which is a direct threat on our auto industry, it’s time to look for new partners such as China, Japan, Europe, South Korea, and others for the EV industry transition.» declared Daniel Breton, President and CEO.

As the national voice for the electric mobility industry, EMC supports policies that enhance availability, expand consumer choice and foster long term economic growth in Canada’s electric transportation ecosystem. We look forward to monitoring the rollout of this agreement and continuing to work with government and industry partners to advance transportation electrification across the country.
