Electric Mobility Canada (EMC) supports the federal government’s decision to impose a tariff on Chinese-built electric vehicles (EVs), however, EMC would like to see that the same is enforced on gas-powered vehicles from China. Currently, there are no tariffs on Chinese internal combustion engine vehicles (ICE).

Canada is investing significantly in developing an EV supply chain and we want to make sure that we protect Canadian workers from unfair work, environmental and trade practices.

On affordability, some car manufacturers from other countries, like South Korea, Japan and Europe, are currently offering smaller, more affordable EVs to other markets around the globe, Canada excluded. EMC invites the federal government to ensure such vehicles become available to the Canadian market. We believe that Canadians are keen, and deserve to have access to more affordable EVs. Furthermore, gatekeeping these vehicles from Canadians will make reaching Canada’s ZEV sales targets a greater challenge.
