OTTAWA – Today, Electric Mobility Canada (EMC), the national industry association representing 180 members across the electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem, including vehicle manufacturers, charging infrastructure providers, mining companies, utilities, unions, think tanks, and universities, called on the Canadian government to maintain the EV Availability Standard and bolster policies that drive innovation, affordability and sustainability in transportation.

At a press conference moderated by EMC President and CEO Daniel Breton, industry leaders emphasized the critical role of the EV Availability Standard in ensuring a steady and predictable increase in the supply of battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. This policy enhances vehicle choice, making EVs more accessible and affordable for Canadians while fostering investment and innovation in local supply chains.

“The EV Availability Standard is a cornerstone of Canada’s clean transportation strategy,” said Daniel Breton. “It supports hundreds of thousands of jobs, drives economic growth, and positions Canada as a leader in the global shift to sustainable mobility. Scrapping this standard would undermine our progress and cede economic opportunities to other nations.”

The Standard also supports the growth of Canada’s EV charging infrastructure and electricity sectors, enabling job creation and community development. Currently, the EV industry sustains at least 130,000 jobs nationwide, with projections estimating growth to 600,000 by 2035. These are high-quality jobs that strengthen Canadian communities.

EMC strongly opposes recent calls to dismantle the EV Availability Standard, which mirror policy rollbacks in the United States. Canada must chart its own path to build a cleaner, healthier, and more competitive future. Cleaner vehicles improve air quality, enhance public health, and create safer, more livable communities.

To strengthen Canada’s leadership in clean transportation, EMC recommends the following actions:

1. Maintain the EV Availability Standard as-is, to ensure Canadians have access to diverse and affordable electric vehicles.
2. Reinstate the EV rebate program, prioritizing households that would benefit most from financial support to purchase EVs.
3. Prioritize EV charging infrastructure as a national project to keep pace with growing EV adoption.
4. Develop a comprehensive Canadian EV industry strategy to secure a domestic supply chain, encompassing mining, refining, battery and component production, charging infrastructure, and electricity generation, ensuring more Canadian content in vehicles.

“Canada has a unique opportunity to lead the global clean transportation revolution,” Breton added. “By staying the course and rejecting shortsighted calls to abandon the EV Availability Standard, we can create jobs, drive innovation, and build a sustainable future for all Canadians.”

Moreover, in early September 2025, EMC conducted a survey through Abacus Data to see where Canadians stood on regulation. Results show that 73% of Canadians want Canada to maintain its own regulations to keep cars cleaner and more efficient.
