Historic vote in House of Commons signals renewed momentum for Canada’s EV future

On June 17, the federal government, along with the NDP and Bloc Québécois, voted in a manner that effectively supported the EV Availability Standard, thus reaffirming their commitment to stable and predictable market development of the EV industry in Canada’s economy. The defeat of Vote No. 14 in the House of Commons is good news for Canada’s EV industry and consumers. The motion to end the ban on new gas-powered vehicle sales was rejected, showing renewed political momentum toward cleaner transportation. This indicates that Parliament is actively considering policies to support EV adoption, creating a more resilient and sustainable environment for industry growth and consumer transition.

Also on June 17, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Julie Dabrusin announced that the federal government will reintroduce an EV rebate program. Although specifics are still pending, EMC welcomes this step toward strengthening Canada’s electric mobility sector and is working closely with all parties to electrify our roads to provide Canadians cleaner air and a prosperous future.
