EMC reacts to the B.C. government’s decision to reduce the cap on ZEV program eligibility

June 19, 2024

Electric Mobility Canada is shocked to see that the Government of British Columbia decided to lower the bar on the eligibility of the provincial CleanBC Go Electric program by reducing the ZEV price cap for cars by $5,000

Electric Mobility Canada is shocked to see that the Government of British Columbia decided to lower the bar on the eligibility of the provincial CleanBC Go Electric program by reducing the ZEV price cap for cars by $5,000 (from $55,000 to $50,000) and reducing the ZEV price cap for SUVs and station wagons by no less than $20,000 (from $70,000 to $50,000). The number of eligible models for the program will be reduced significantly as a result.

“Considering that B.C. is the province where the average price of a new light duty vehicle was the highest in Canada at $68,896 in March 2024, we are really surprised and disappointed to see that a zero emission vehicle will have to be offered at a price that is almost $20,000 BELOW this average price to be eligible for a rebate. This means that many B.C. consumers won’t be able to go electric and may end up buying a gas vehicle instead, which contradicts the provincial government’s own ZEV sales targets and regulation. We strongly urge the B.C. government to reconsider this hasty announcement and engage with the industry to find a reasonable way forward”, Daniel Breton, President and CEO, Electric Mobility Canada.
