With international goals, Doc Borné became, at the beginning of 2016, Astria Technologies with a constantly growing team. It was also at the same time that the Astria Technologies charging stations passed the test to obtain the crucial UL Listed certification becoming the first Canadian company to obtain such certification. Innovative Vehicle Institute

Consolidating expertise and cutting-edge equipment, the Innovative Vehicle Institute is at the heart of the electric vehicle ecosystem. Its mandate is to support companies towards innovation through applied research, technical assistance, training and information whose purpose is to reduce transportation’s environmental impact. The IVI is an incorporated NPO, with a status of Technology Access Center and is supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research of Canada (NSERC) and the Government of Quebec.


The Electric Circuit

The Electric Circuit, the largest public charging network in Québec, has come to Ontario. In early 2017, the Electric Circuit began rolling out a fast-charge corridor between Québec and the Ottawa area as part of the Electric Vehicle Chargers Ontario (EVCO) program. This corridor offers 14 fast-charge stations and 7 standard stations along Highways 401, 416, 417, Route 17 and in Ottawa. The Electric Circuit comprises more than 800 public charging stations in Québec and Ontario, including over 75 fast-charge stations.

Ministry of Environment Ontario

To fight climate change, Ontario is investing proceeds from its carbon market into programs that help households and businesses reduce greenhouse gas emissions and save money on energy costs, including incentives towards the purchase of an electric vehicle and electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and support for local and provincial cycling infrastructure and bike parking to help improve cycling networks in the province.

The University of Toronto

The University of Toronto – Havelaar Electric Vehicle (UTHEV) Research Centre is a university-industry partnership focused on the advancement of technologies for Electric Vehicles (EVs). UTHEV is led by Director, Prof. Olivier Trescases and Associate Director, Prof. Peter Lehn in The Edward S. Rogers Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, with multi-disciplinary collaborations with professors from the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) and the U of T Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS).

UTHEV’s research activities target the advancement of power electronics for EV drivetrains, charging infrastructure, and energy storage for EVs. To enhance consumer adoption of EVs, advances are required to:

  1. improve EV driving range through enhanced efficiency
  2. reduce high costs associated with an EV’s battery system through better energy utilization
  3. reduce charging times and improve access to charging facilities by lowering costs.

In addition, the electrification of cars provides a natural platform for autonomous vehicle development. Careful integration of autonomous operation can enhance EV performance while also improving vehicle safety.
